Of course I don’t have to elaborate on the advantages of hair extensions, but there are also disadvantages of hair extensions, think about this carefully before you start.
The advantages and disadvantages of hair extensions
You can get hair extensions everywhere and there is plenty of choice in different hair extensions. You have extensions of real hair and of fake hair anyway. It goes without saying that extensions of real hair are not only much more beautiful and natural, but there is also a significant difference in how long the extensions remain beautiful. Real hair will last longer than fake hair, if you take good care of your extensions. I have experience with bondings and clip in extensions. In the photo above I am wearing the clip in extensions. With bondings, hair extensions are attached to your own hair by means of a keratin bond. They are then attached to your own hair tuft by tuft. The bonds are heated briefly so that they stay well on your own hair. I bought the clip in extensions when I got married three years ago and I still wear them every now and then. I don’t need to elaborate on the great advantage of hair extensions. With extensions you have a full(er) head of hair that you can suddenly do much more with than with your own hair. I’ve never had very thick and full hair, but since the major surgery where I was under anesthesia for four and a half hours, I’ve also suffered a lot from hair loss . However, hair extensions are not always the perfect solution, because I really thought that there are some drawbacks that you should definitely not underestimate.
Hair extensions are not cheap
As I just said you have all kinds of different hair extensions, but which one you choose; hair extensions are not cheap, and I mainly mean the hair extensions of real hair. The clip in hair extensions I bought for the wedding cost me about three hundred euros. Now I have to say that the quality is absolutely fantastic. The fact that I’ve had them for more than three years, of course, says something. In the evening you take the clips out, so you don’t sleep with them. At least I never did. You can also straighten and curl them without making them ugly. Bond prices vary widely. In any case, it depends on whether you go for a hair extension or a hair thickener, or perhaps even both. At the time, I had 75 hair extensions in my hair and a four-month subscription. This means I had them replaced every four months, in other words, three times a year. I paid €87.25 per month for this.
Disadvantages of hair extensions: with hair extensions you quickly suffer from tangles
One of the biggest disadvantages of hair extensions I personally found that you quickly suffered from tangles. Sometimes it was so bad that I sometimes had to cut out an extension!
Hair extensions can be harmful to your own hair
In fact, almost all treatments for your hair can be bad. Blow-drying, curling, styling and dyeing are all things that can seriously damage your hair. Hair extensions can also damage your hair. This is especially likely if you leave your extensions in place for too long. At a certain point, the extensions become too heavy for your own hair and then your own hair can break off. The hair that has fallen out (which are in the bonding and therefore cannot fall out) will also sit between your own hair above the bonding at a certain moment. This causes it to tangle, so that these normally loose hairs are no longer easy to comb when removing. It is therefore very important to remove your hair extensions on time.
You may suffer from a headache
Imust say that I have not suffered from it myself, but headaches after putting hair extensions are not uncommon. In any case, you have to take into account extra weight that you are normally not used to carrying on your head and if extensions are used really tight, you can experience some pain, especially in the beginning and while sleeping.
Disadvantages of hair extensions: you cannot use all hair products
When I had the bondings, I was strongly advised not to use ‘normal’ hair products. Most hair products that you buy at the drugstore, perfumery and hairdresser contain fruit acids. Now it is true that hair extensions are eventually removed from your hair with fruit acids. For that reason, it is recommended to use hair care to which no fruit acids have been added, because you run the risk that your hair extensions will loosen and fall out. So I bought products at the hair extensions salon, but I thought they smelled really bad. Eventually I stopped for that reason and then I switched back to my normal hair products (I used Kiehl’s products at the time) and I have to say that I didn’t suddenly notice that my hair extensions started to come loose. So it may also have been a commercial talk, but I wanted to mention the fact in my list of disadvantages of hair extensions.
Hair extensions need a lot of attention and care
Because hair extensions do not get natural nutrition from your scalp, it is important to take good care of them. If you normally don’t spend a lot of time on your hair, keep in mind that you should now. Especially in combing and brushing it takes quite some time. What you should also take into account is that hair extensions dry a lot less quickly than your own hair.
